Refresh and try again. Whores for Gloria by William T. Whether or not Gloria exists or existed among the sordid cast of Whores for Gloria , she is the force that drives Jimmy's narrative. People live for her; people die for her. From the outset, it is clear that Jimmy a veteran of the Vietnam War has lost her. As Jimmy collects stories and trinkets from sex workers, one can't help but question the nature of Jimmy's relationship to Gloria. This down-and-out narrative about the underbelly of society recalls the autobiographical novels of Charles Bukowski Women in particular.
Vollmann, however, is not bound by Bukowski's adherence to autobiographic accuracy. Although Whores for Gloria attests to contain true stories from sex workers, they are integrated within a frame story "Fictitious is the following. All of the whore's-tales herein, however, are real. The result is more literary than Bukowski's writing, but no less indulgent. The difference being that while Bukowski is self-indulgent, Vollmann indulges a topic of interest sex work.
Like Bukowski, Vollmann's writing is dated by its use of slang, much of which is intentionally offensive, attributed to characters who are ignorant or uneducated or otherwise stunted Jimmy uses slang that dates from his tour in Vietnam, whereas the author distinguishes himself from Jimmy's terminology by stipulating "Indochinese".
I might call you Gloria, Jimmy said. Who the fuck is that? Sometimes I don't believe in her either, he admitted. Sometimes I don't believe in anything except not believing.
